Daniel Caesar

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Toronto-area singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar, born Ashton Simmonds, emerged from the city’s independent R&B ecosystem with intimate, gospel-informed songs that often treated romance, faith and self-doubt as overlapping subjects. Early projects including Praise Break and Pilgrim’s Paradise built a devoted online audience before his 2017 debut album Freudian brought that sound into the international R&B mainstream. “Get You,” featuring Kali Uchis, and “Best Part,” with H.E.R., became signature recordings, and Freudian earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best R&B Album.

“Best Part” won the 2019 GRAMMY for Best R&B Performance, confirming Caesar’s crossover from independent Canadian artist to a major global R&B songwriter. He followed with the more experimental Case Study 01 and then Never Enough, which balanced his restrained vocal style and close-miked intimacy with fuller arrangements, guitar, blues and more unsettled writing about love, celebrity and responsibility. His appearance on Justin Bieber’s “Peaches” further extended his reach into mainstream pop without fundamentally changing the inward-looking character of his own work.

By the mid-2020s, Caesar had become one of the clearest examples of Toronto R&B developing a global audience outside the rap-centred story usually told about the city. In 2026, the JUNO Awards presented him with the International Achievement Award, recognizing sustained worldwide success. His catalogue helped establish a lane for Canadian R&B that could be quiet, devotional, conflicted and deeply personal while still operating at international scale.
