City and Colour
St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada
City and Colour began as the quieter outlet for St. Catharines singer-songwriter Dallas Green while Alexisonfire was becoming one of Canada's defining post-hardcore bands. The contrast was immediate. Where Alexisonfire relied on collective intensity, Green's solo songs foregrounded voice, acoustic guitar and direct emotional writing. His 2005 debut Sometimes grew from material first shared informally and became a platinum Canadian success, establishing City and Colour as a substantial project in its own right rather than a side project attached to a heavier band.
Bring Me Your Love widened the sound with fuller arrangements and songs such as "The Girl" and "Sleeping Sickness," while Little Hell brought Green to an even larger audience and won the JUNO for Alternative Album of the Year. The Hurry and the Harm, If I Should Go Before You and A Pill for Loneliness continued the shift toward a full-band version of City and Colour, incorporating folk, blues, soul and atmospheric rock without abandoning the intimacy of the early records. Green also formed You+Me with P!nk, another example of how his songwriting moved comfortably outside the expectations created by Alexisonfire.
City and Colour matters in Canadian music because Green built two major careers with strikingly different emotional and sonic vocabularies. The project helped normalize the idea that an artist associated with hardcore could move into singer-songwriter and roots territory without treating either audience as disposable. By the time The Love Still Held Me Near arrived in 2023, City and Colour had become a long-running Canadian headliner with an international audience and a catalogue that stands independently beside Green's work with Alexisonfire.
