Chromeo
Montréal, Québec, Canada
David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel met as teenagers in Montréal and first made music in the city's hip-hop orbit before developing Chromeo's deliberately polished electro-funk identity. Their early records drew openly from 1980s funk, boogie, synth-pop and R&B, with Macklovitch's guitar and Gemayel's talk-box becoming signature elements. Fancy Footwork was the breakthrough, turning songs such as "Bonafied Lovin'" and the title track into durable dance-floor staples and positioning the duo at the front of the 2000s electro-funk revival.
Business Casual broadened their audience, while White Women produced "Jealous (I Ain't with It)," one of their most recognizable pop crossovers. Head Over Heels pushed toward a fuller R&B studio sound and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. By Adult Contemporary, released in 2024, Chromeo had spent two decades refining the same basic proposition rather than abandoning it: sophisticated musicianship, knowingly romantic lyrics, vintage hardware and tightly constructed funk songs designed to work in both clubs and large festival settings.
Chromeo's importance lies partly in longevity. Few Canadian electronic acts have sustained an international touring career for so long around such a specific musical language. The duo helped make retro funk feel contemporary during an era dominated by indie dance and electro, while their Montréal roots connect them to the city's wider network of hip-hop, DJ culture and electronic experimentation. Their catalogue is playful on the surface, but the craft underneath it has made Chromeo a durable bridge between classic funk vocabulary and modern dance-pop.
