Charlotte Cornfield
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Cornfield developed through Canada's independent music circuit as a writer whose songs make ordinary detail carry unusual emotional weight. Trained as a drummer as well as a songwriter, she moved between percussion work and her own records before albums such as Future Snowbird and The Shape of Your Name sharpened a conversational folk-rock style built around close observation rather than grand gestures. The Shape of Your Name reached the 2019 Polaris Music Prize Long List, giving broader national recognition to a catalogue that had grown steadily through clubs, small labels and collaborations.
Highs in the Minuses, released in 2021, expanded Cornfield's audience and established a looser full-band sound around writing that could be funny, anxious and devastating within the same song. Could Have Done Anything followed in 2023 and drew strong international critical attention while Cornfield toured across North America and Europe with artists including Broken Social Scene, Julien Baker and Bonny Light Horseman. By 2025, Polaris was presenting her as an alum with a distinctive songwriting voice, reflecting how a once-under-the-radar Toronto artist had become an increasingly visible part of Canada's contemporary singer-songwriter landscape.
Her sixth album, Hurts Like Hell, arrived in March 2026 through Next Door Records in Canada and Merge Records internationally. Produced by Philip Weinrobe and made with a full backing band, the record includes contributions from Feist, Buck Meek and members of Palehound and Lake Street Dive. It was Cornfield's first album recorded after becoming a parent, and its wider collaborative approach mirrors a career that has gradually grown outward without sanding away the specificity of her writing. Cornfield matters less as a conventional breakout story than as an example of how sustained independent craft can become its own form of influence and international reach.
