Carly Rae Jepsen
Mission, British Columbia, Canada
Mission, British Columbia-born singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen first reached a national audience by finishing third on Canadian Idol in 2007, then released the folk-pop-leaning debut Tug of War. Her career changed dramatically with “Call Me Maybe,” first released in Canada before becoming a worldwide hit in 2012. The song spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, earned GRAMMY nominations for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance and carried the album Kiss into the international pop market.
Jepsen responded to that enormous single not by trying to reproduce it indefinitely, but by becoming more specific about the kind of pop she wanted to make. E•MO•TION drew heavily on 1980s synth-pop while foregrounding detailed songwriting and songs such as “Run Away with Me,” “Your Type” and “I Really Like You.” The album helped establish the devoted audience that has sustained her beyond the one-hit narrative surrounding “Call Me Maybe.” Dedicated and The Loneliest Time continued that approach, moving through disco, synth-pop, soft rock and intimate balladry while keeping romantic anticipation and emotional immediacy at the centre.
That second act is central to Jepsen’s significance. She moved from one of the biggest singles of the early 2010s into a durable songwriter-led pop career whose audience values albums, deep cuts and stylistic consistency as much as chart peaks. In Canadian pop, her catalogue offers an unusual example of global viral success becoming the starting point for a more idiosyncratic long-term artistic identity rather than its endpoint.
