Caribou
Dundas, Ontario, Canada
Caribou is the principal recording project of Dundas, Ontario-born musician, producer and mathematician Dan Snaith. After beginning his career under the name Manitoba, Snaith developed a catalogue built around constant reinvention, moving through sample-based electronics, psychedelic pop and increasingly dance-oriented production. Under the Caribou name, Andorra became a major breakthrough and won the 2008 Polaris Music Prize, establishing him as one of Canada's most internationally respected electronic artists.
Snaith changed direction again with Swim in 2010, using unstable rhythms, processed vocals and club music as the foundation for songs rather than conventional electronic tracks. Its international reception expanded Caribou's audience substantially, while the more direct and soulful Our Love continued the progression and earned a Grammy nomination. In parallel, Snaith's Daphni project gave him a separate outlet for dance-floor-focused records and DJ culture, allowing the two identities to develop in conversation with each other.
Later Caribou albums Suddenly and Honey continued that pattern of deliberate change, with Honey bringing the pop and communal dance impulses of Caribou and Daphni closer together. Snaith's importance to Canadian music comes from the longevity of that experimentation: he has moved from Ontario's independent electronic underground to major international festival stages without settling into a fixed signature, while retaining a recognizable emphasis on rhythm, melody and meticulous production.
