Bass Is Base

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Bass Is Base formed in Toronto in 1993 around Chin Injeti, Ivana Santilli and Roger Mooking, bringing together R&B, hip-hop, funk and live-band musicianship at a time when Canadian urban music was still fighting for consistent mainstream exposure. Rather than separating singing, rapping and instrumental performance, the trio treated them as parts of the same musical language: Injeti handled bass and vocals, Santilli brought keyboards, trumpet and vocals, while Mooking rapped and played percussion. Their early shows included opening slots for acts as varied as TLC, Cypress Hill and Barenaked Ladies, reflecting how comfortably they crossed scene boundaries.

The independent debut First Impressions for the Bottom Jigglers won the 1995 JUNO Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording, a significant achievement for a group working largely outside the country's major-label system. Bass Is Base then signed with A&M and released Memories of the SoulShack Survivors, which earned another JUNO nomination the following year. The single "I Cry" became their first Canadian Top 20 hit, while songs such as "Funkmobile" and "My Roots" captured the trio's mix of soul melody, rap, funk rhythm and multicultural Toronto perspective.

The group's lifespan was relatively short, but its afterlife is unusually important. Injeti became a Grammy-winning producer and songwriter, Santilli built a respected solo and collaborative career, and Mooking moved through music into a highly visible culinary and media career without abandoning his creative work. Bass Is Base therefore reads as both a strong 1990s catalogue and an early node in Toronto's broader R&B and hip-hop network, connecting independent scene-building with careers that continued to influence Canadian culture long after the trio ended.
