Barenaked Ladies
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Formed in Scarborough in 1988, Barenaked Ladies developed from the acoustic partnership of Ed Robertson and Steven Page into one of Canada’s most distinctive pop-rock bands. Their self-released cassette The Yellow Tape became the first independent release certified platinum in Canada, an early sign of the unusually direct relationship the group built with its audience. The 1992 debut album Gordon then became a Canadian phenomenon, combining quick-witted songwriting, harmonies and an improvisational live personality on songs such as “If I Had $1,000,000” and “Brian Wilson.”
The band’s reach expanded internationally through relentless touring and a catalogue that became more polished without losing its eccentricity. The live album Rock Spectacle helped build a U.S. audience, and 1998’s Stunt turned that momentum into a commercial breakthrough. “One Week” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “It’s All Been Done” and later “Pinch Me” established the group as a durable presence in North American pop and alternative radio. Their ability to move between comedy, melancholy and finely constructed pop is a major reason the catalogue has outlasted the novelty label sometimes attached to their earliest success.
Barenaked Ladies were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2018 after selling more than 15 million albums worldwide. Their later career has included continued albums and touring, the theme song for The Big Bang Theory and the 2013 collaboration “I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing)” with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield while he was aboard the International Space Station. The band’s longevity, independent beginnings and crossover success make it an important bridge between Canada’s early-1990s alternative boom and international mainstream pop.
