Avril Lavigne

Greater Napanee, Ontario, Canada

Ontario singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne emerged in 2002 as a teenage alternative to the highly polished pop dominating the era. Raised in Greater Napanee, she broke internationally with Let Go, an album built around guitar-driven songs such as “Complicated,” “Sk8er Boi” and “I’m with You.” Its mix of pop melody, skate-punk attitude and confessional songwriting earned multiple GRAMMY nominations and made Lavigne a defining figure in the early-2000s pop-punk boom.

She followed with the darker Under My Skin and later moved between pop-rock, power pop and more overtly commercial pop while retaining the directness and rebellious visual language associated with her debut. Her influence became especially visible during the pop-punk revival of the early 2020s, when a new generation of artists cited the style she helped bring into mainstream pop.

Lavigne returned emphatically to the genre with 2022’s Love Sux and celebrated more than two decades of work with a Greatest Hits project and tour. Her career helped open mainstream space for young women using punk aesthetics without abandoning pop songwriting.
