Arkells formed in Hamilton, Ontario in the mid-2000s, taking their name from Arkell Street near McMaster University, where members of the group studied and rehearsed. After the self-released Deadlines EP, the band signed with Dine Alone and released Jackson Square in 2008. Named for the downtown Hamilton complex, the record established the group’s working-class hometown identity and a soul-inflected rock sound that translated quickly to Canadian radio and an increasingly busy touring schedule. The momentum earned Arkells the 2010 JUNO Award for New Group of the Year.
Rather than staying fixed in the scrappier sound of the debut, Arkells steadily expanded toward pop, soul and arena rock. Michigan Left helped win Group of the Year at the JUNOs, while 2014’s High Noon produced “Leather Jacket” and brought both Group of the Year and Rock Album of the Year honours. Morning Report and Rally Cry pushed further into big choruses, piano, horns and politically engaged songwriting; Rally Cry also won Rock Album of the Year. That evolution helped the band become one of the most reliable large-venue Canadian rock acts of its generation.
Hamilton remains central to the group’s identity even as its audience has expanded internationally. Arkells have repeatedly built major hometown shows into their touring life and have used their platform for civic and community-minded projects, while lead singer Max Kerman’s writing often mixes personal stories with labour, politics and public life. Later releases such as Blink Once, Blink Twice and Laundry Pile continued to stretch the band’s palette. Their career shows how a 2000s Canadian indie-rock act could grow into an arena-scale institution without cutting the connection to the city that shaped it.
