Anjulie
Oakville, Ontario, Canada
Oakville, Ontario singer-songwriter Anjulie Persaud emerged in the late 2000s with a pop sound shaped by R&B, electronic production and the reggae and calypso she heard growing up in an Indo-Guyanese household. Her 2009 debut album introduced "Boom," a sleek, percussion-driven single that brought her early television and radio exposure and established her as a Canadian pop artist with a strong songwriting identity. She followed with singles including "Brand New Chick" and "You and I," moving further toward dance-pop while retaining the rhythmic instincts that distinguished her from much of the country's singer-songwriter mainstream.
"Brand New Chick" became one of her largest Canadian hits, reaching the Top 20 of the Canadian Hot 100, earning platinum certification and receiving a 2012 JUNO nomination for Dance Recording of the Year. Anjulie's career also expanded well beyond her own catalogue. She built a parallel reputation as a songwriter, contributing to material recorded by artists including Kelly Clarkson, Nicki Minaj, Cassie and Icona Pop and collaborating across pop and electronic music with producers and artists such as Zedd, Diplo and Benny Benassi.
That dual role is what gives Anjulie an important place in modern Canadian pop. Her own recordings connected the late-2000s singer-songwriter world to the EDM-heavy pop that followed, while her behind-the-scenes writing placed a Canadian voice inside a much larger international hit-making network. She has continued releasing independently and collaborating across electronic and alternative pop, making her career less about one sustained commercial era than about adaptability across songwriting, performance and production-driven pop culture.
