Anachnid

Montréal, Québec, Canada

Montréal-based Anachnid is an Oji-Cree and Mi'kmaq multidisciplinary artist whose electronic music, visual identity and storytelling draw directly from Indigenous experience without reducing it to a single genre or message. Raised largely in Atikamekw territory in western Québec, she developed a performance language that moves between experimental pop, electronic production and Indigenous cultural reference. Her early singles, including "Windigo" and "Sky Woman," introduced an artist comfortable turning traditional stories, contemporary urban life and personal mythology into the same sonic world.

Her 2020 debut album Dreamweaver brought that work to a wider Canadian audience. The album was longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and earned Félix nominations, while Anachnid's songwriting and performance work also received recognition from the Indigenous Music Awards. In 2021, she won the Félix for Indigenous Artist of the Year, confirming her as one of the more distinctive Indigenous voices in Québec's contemporary music scene. Songs from Dreamweaver balance atmospheric electronic production with direct writing about identity, violence, spirituality and survival, making the record feel both personal and politically aware without becoming didactic.

Anachnid's significance lies in how naturally she connects scenes that are often kept separate: Indigenous music, Montréal experimental pop and electronic production. Rather than presenting tradition and modernity as opposites, her work treats them as part of the same living identity. Later releases including "Freak of Nature" and 2026's "Happy Birthday" have kept that approach active, while her broader multidisciplinary practice reinforces the sense that Anachnid is building a world around the music rather than simply a catalogue of songs.
