Alysha Brilla
Ontario, Canada
Ontario singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Alysha Brilla has built an independent career around a blend of soul, folk, pop and globally rooted rhythmic traditions. Raised in the Great Lakes region with Indo-Tanzanian and Irish-Scottish Canadian family roots, Brilla developed a musical language shaped by both diasporic culture and contemporary studio craft. Her early solo albums established her as a self-directed writer and producer rather than only a front-of-mic performer, with In My Head earning a JUNO nomination for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year.
Brilla followed with Womyn and Rooted, both extending her focus on identity, gender, ancestry and community while deepening the production side of her work. Womyn received another JUNO nomination, and Rooted brought a third. Her production work also earned recognition at the Independent Music Awards, while collaborations and studio credits have connected her with artists including Bedouin Soundclash and Digging Roots. That combination of songwriting and technical authorship is central to her significance: Brilla has consistently foregrounded the role of women and gender-diverse creators behind the console as well as onstage.
Her work later expanded into film composition and education. Brilla composed the original score for Fawzia Mirza's The Queen of My Dreams, earning a 2024 Canadian Screen Award nomination, and has taught and spoken about music production, representation and creative practice at institutions including Berklee College of Music. By 2025 she had also been recognized by Women in Music for international leadership. Brilla's place in Canadian music is therefore broader than any one record: she represents an independent model in which performance, production, cultural identity, mentorship and advocacy remain part of the same artistic practice.
