Alvvays
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto-based indie-pop band Alvvays grew from musical connections that stretched across Atlantic Canada before coalescing around singer-guitarist Molly Rankin, guitarist Alec O'Hanley and keyboardist Kerri MacLellan. Rankin and MacLellan grew up as neighbours in Cape Breton, and the group brought that melodic background together with jangly guitar pop, noise and understated wit. Their self-titled 2014 debut turned "Archie, Marry Me" into an international indie staple and established Alvvays well beyond the Canadian club circuit.
The 2017 follow-up Antisocialites sharpened the band's combination of crystalline melodies and bruised romantic writing, earning a JUNO nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. After a five-year gap marked by extensive touring, lineup changes, stolen demos, a basement flood and pandemic delays, Alvvays returned with Blue Rev in 2022. Recorded in Los Angeles with Canadian producer Shawn Everett, the album pushed their sound toward denser distortion, synthesizers and more intricate arrangements without losing Rankin and O'Hanley's concise songwriting.
Blue Rev became the band's largest critical breakthrough, landing prominently on international year-end lists and bringing Alvvays their first Grammy nomination. Their significance lies in how a distinctly Canadian band with roots in Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island and Toronto translated classic guitar-pop language into one of the most acclaimed indie-rock catalogues of its generation, with an influence and audience that now extend far beyond Canada.
