alessia cara
Brampton, Ontario, Canada
Brampton-born singer-songwriter Alessia Cara began posting acoustic covers online as a teenager before her 2015 debut single “Here” turned introversion into a pop breakthrough. Built around the perspective of someone who would rather leave a party than perform enthusiasm for it, the song reached the Billboard Hot 100 Top 5 and introduced a voice that felt deliberately conversational rather than manufactured. Her debut album Know-It-All followed with “Scars to Your Beautiful,” extending that focus on self-image and social pressure.
Cara quickly moved into major collaborations without losing the personal tone of her writing. She appeared with Zedd on “Stay” and with Logic and Khalid on “1-800-273-8255,” while continuing to develop her own catalogue through The Pains of Growing and In the Meantime. At the 2018 GRAMMY Awards she won Best New Artist, becoming the first Canadian artist to receive the award, and earned additional nominations connected to “Stay” and “1-800-273-8255.”
Her importance within Canadian pop lies partly in the route she represented: bedroom recordings and online covers could lead to a global career without requiring a larger-than-life persona. Cara's strongest work has repeatedly used pop structure to make interior subjects — shyness, body image, uncertainty and adulthood — feel communal, giving her a distinct place among the Canadian singers who broke internationally during the streaming era.
