Alanis Morissette
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Ottawa-born singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette began her recording career in Canada as a teenage pop artist before radically reinventing her sound with 1995’s Jagged Little Pill. Created with producer Glen Ballard, the album paired conversational, confessional writing with alternative rock and became an international phenomenon through songs including “You Oughta Know,” “Hand in My Pocket,” “Ironic” and “You Learn.”
It reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won Album of the Year and Best Rock Album at the GRAMMY Awards, while “You Oughta Know” won Best Rock Song and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. The record’s frank treatment of anger, intimacy, spirituality and self-examination helped expand the emotional vocabulary available to women in mainstream rock and influenced generations of singer-songwriters who followed.
Morissette continued exploring alternative rock, electronic textures and introspective songwriting on albums including Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie and Under Rug Swept. Her career remains one of the clearest examples of a Canadian artist reshaping global popular music while maintaining an unmistakably personal writing voice.
