A-Trak

Montréal, Québec, Canada

Montréal-born Alain Macklovitch became an international turntablism prodigy before he was old enough to enter many of the clubs where DJs worked. He won the DMC World DJ Championship in 1997 as a teenager and accumulated five major DJ titles by age 18, establishing a technical reputation built on scratching, battle routines and an unusually precise understanding of the turntable as an instrument.

A-Trak then translated that specialist credibility into a much broader career. Years as Kanye West's touring DJ placed him inside arena-scale hip-hop just as digital DJ technology was changing live performance. In 2007 he co-founded Fool's Gold Records, which became an important bridge between rap, electro and independent dance music and helped develop artists including Kid Cudi, Danny Brown and Flosstradamus. His Dirty South Dance mixes captured that rap-meets-electro moment from the DJ booth rather than treating the genres as separate scenes.

With Armand Van Helden, A-Trak formed Duck Sauce and reached a global pop audience through “Barbra Streisand,” while his solo production and remixes continued moving between hip-hop and electronic music. His Canadian significance is partly institutional: from Montréal turntablism to Fool's Gold, he helped turn DJ culture itself into a space where scenes, genres and emerging artists could connect.
