2Rude
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto producer, songwriter and label founder Richard Coombs, better known as 2Rude, occupies an important place in the infrastructure of late-1990s and early-2000s Canadian hip-hop and R&B. Working through Rudimental Records, he built records around Canadian voices at a moment when domestic rap and R&B still had limited major-label support. His production on Maestro's 1998 single "Stick to Your Vision" helped return one of Canadian hip-hop's foundational artists to the charts, while collaborations with singers and rappers across Toronto's scene made 2Rude a connective figure between hip-hop, soul and reggae-influenced urban music.
His 1999 compilation album Rudimental 2K made that network the point. The project paired Canadian performers with established U.S. guests and included "Thinkin' About You," featuring Snow, Smoothe da Hustler, Miranda and Latoya Walsh. The song won the 2000 Juno Award for Best R&B/Soul Recording, while "Dissin' Us," featuring Grimmi Grimmi and Jully Black, earned a MuchMusic Video Award. Rather than functioning only as a behind-the-scenes beatmaker, 2Rude used the album and his label to create a platform where Canadian rap and R&B artists could appear together at scale.
That role is central to his significance. 2Rude's catalogue intersects with Maestro, Saukrates, Jully Black, Glenn Lewis, Eternia and other artists who helped turn Toronto's urban-music community into a sustainable national scene. His work illustrates how Canadian hip-hop grew not only through breakthrough MCs but through producers, independent labels and collaborative records that gave emerging artists room to develop and cross genre lines.
